Alex Edelman's Just For Us returns to the Mark Taper Forum March 26-31!
Expertly crafted by one of comedy’s most distinctive voices, this singular theatrical experience is an exploration of identity and our collective capacity for empathy—and it’s also “belly-laugh funny!” (The New York Times). In the wake of a string of anti-Semitic rhetoric pointed in his direction online, standup comic Edelman decides to go straight to the source; specifically, Queens, where he covertly attends a meeting of White Nationalists and comes face-to-face with the people behind the keyboards. What happens next forms the backbone of the shockingly relevant, utterly hilarious, and only moderately perspirant stories that comprise Just for Us.

The four tableaus of Igor Stravinsky’s Petrushka are vividly brought to life by Michael Tilson Thomas, who actually met the composer in Los Angeles in his youth. Thomas once described Stravinsky as an “amazing mind that was searching always for the most original solution” to his inventions, and he brings that keen understanding to conducting Stravinsky’s work. Tchaikovsky wrote his Fourth Symphony as a mirror to the many conflicts in his life, wrestling with fate and personal turmoil, leading to a passionate thrill ride of a symphony.

Featuring one of the most iconic scores of all time by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill, an updated book from Harvey Fierstein based on the original classic by Isobel Lennart, tap choreography by Ayodele Casel, choreography by Ellenore Scott, and direction from Michael Mayer, this love letter to the theatre has the whole shebang!
The sensational Broadway revival dazzles with celebrated classic songs, including “Don’t Rain On My Parade,” “I’m the Greatest Star,” and “People.” This bittersweet comedy is the story of the indomitable Fanny Brice, a girl from the Lower East Side who dreamed of a life on the stage. Everyone told her she’d never be a star, but then something funny happened—she became one of the most beloved performers in history, shining brighter than the brightest lights of Broadway.

Cellist Yo-Yo Ma’s multi-faceted career is testament to his enduring belief in culture’s power to generate trust and understanding. With partners from around the world and across disciplines, he creates programs that stretch the boundaries of genre and tradition to explore music-making as a way not only to share and express meaning, but also as a model for the cultural collaboration he considers essential to a strong society.
Yo-Yo Ma is joined by longtime collaborator Kathryn Stott. Internationally recognized as one of Britain’s most versatile and imaginative pianists, Stott was hailed by The Washington Post as “every bit Ma’s equal, playing with striking individuality.” Together they have toured the globe and released multiple albums including 2020’s Songs of Comfort and Hope in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Show more Leading Australian conductor Simone Young leads the LA Phil in the wild display of unconventional forms that is Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Eighth Symphony. The shortest of his symphonies, the Eighth shows Vaughan Williams fashioning a refined and cultured English dreamscape while searching for a theme and dedicating entire movements to winds and strings. Considered to be his most raw and emotional composition, Elgar’s dark and dramatic response to the end of World War I—and his own life—is richly blended together by the bow of French cellist and LA Phil favorite Gautier Capuçon.
Concerts in the Thursday 2 subscription series are generously supported by the Otis Booth Foundation.
