CALENDAR ADVISORY: DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS ACTIVITIES Saturday, October 27 – Sunday, November 4, 2018
GRAND PARK’S DOWNTOWN DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS CELEBRATES HOLIDAY TRADITIONS WITH A WEEK OF FREE ACTIVITIES AND EXPERIENCES FOR ALL
WHAT: Grand Park celebrates the traditions of Día de los Muertos with multiple ways to experience and learn about the holiday. In partnership with Self-Help Graphics & Art and LORE Media & Arts, the park will present Looking to the Past to Build the Future, featuring 50 altars and art installations created by local artists and community groups in honor of Día de los Muertos.
The week-long celebration kicks off on Saturday, October 27, 2018 with Grand Park’s Noche de Ofrenda, a traditional ceremony honoring the dead featuring prayer led by the local indigenous community; dancers representing the Aztecan, Oaxacan and Michoacán traditions; as well as Los Angeles-based poets and musicians. This year’s Noche de Ofrenda will feature East Los Angeles Grammy-award winning band, Quetzal and include the official unveiling of Grand Park’s Día de los Muertos altars and art installations, which will remain in the park through Sunday, November 4, 2018. Free lunchtime altar tours will highlight the artwork and discuss the traditions of the holiday.
In conjunction with Grand Avenue Arts: All Access, family-friendly activities on Saturday, November 3, 2018 will include altar-making workshops with altaristas Ofelia Esparza and Rosanna Ahrens and Danza workshops with Jeniffer Sanchez of Indigital Productions, and Grand Park’s Baile de los Muertos, a Saturday evening dance celebration with next level rhythms by the SUBSUELO crew and special guest performances.
