Versa-Style Dance Company
Flow Within explores the concepts of self-discovery and healing through meditative movement. Versa-Style Dance Company uses Hip Hop and street dance vernacular to tell stories of our own personal journeys and pay homage to the dance culture that raised us. We also show our love to Los Angeles, where we have all grown and thrived as individuals, by taking advantage of our county’s unique ocean scenery. The waves of the Pacific, the street dance activism movement and music from artist d. Sabela Grimes inspired us all to develop our internal pathways to self-development, our “flow within”, and reach higher vibrations physically, mentally and spiritually.
About the Company
Versa-Style Dance Company (VSDC) is a leading Hip Hop dance ensemble that consists of committed and conscientious artists representing the diversity and beautiful complexity of Los Angeles.
Jackie Lopez aka Miss Funk & Leigh Foaad aka Breeze-lee are the co-founders & co-artistic directors of Versa-Style Dance Company. Together, they share a common passion for dance and performance. This connection resulted in the creation of VSDC in 2005. As L.A. natives, Lopez and Foaad embrace the culture and honor the history/legacy of Hip Hop dance by passing it on to future generations.
Versa-Style brings its unique mix of vibrant, high energy, improvisational movement and authentic, evocative choreography front and center through choreographic works that inspire, motivate and challenge the status quo. VSDC uses street dance forms such as Hip Hop, popping, locking, breaking and house to tell stories of inner-city struggle, societal dynamics of race and culture, and the HOPE that unites us all. Over the last 15 years, the company has served as U.S. cultural ambassadors traveling, teaching and spreading their love for Hip Hop culture in places such as Israel, India, France, Italy and Colombia to name a few.
VSDC promotes the empowerment, artistry and value of Hip Hop dance culture through full-length street dance theater productions, educational performances and deeply rooted community engagement. VSDC will continue to uphold these values and thanks the creators of these powerful movements who continue to inspire us today.
We identify as Hip Hop ARTivists. For the past 15 years, Versa-Style Dance Company has been dedicated to the global Hip Hop and street dance community through teaching, club culture, worldwide battles and competitions, while creating Hip Hop dance theater works for the concert stage. Hip Hop roots within Black and Latin communities have served as a tool for social justice, community growth and personal empowerment. We reflect these values in our artistic work onstage. Furthermore, Hip Hop is the art of our current generation, a reflection of our Black and Latin communities.
We are a multicultural dance ensemble, representing the beautiful yet complex landscape of Los Angeles. We consist of 11 company members, four of whom identify as Black, four of whom identify as Latinx and the remaining three members identify as Filipino, Russian-Polish, and Egyptian.
