The Spirit Chorale of Los Angeles
Enjoy an encore performance of The Spirit Chorale of Los Angeles from the 58th Annual L.A. County Holiday Celebration.
About The Performers
The Spirit Chorale celebrates a 28-year journey of preserving the music of African American composers and the Negro spiritual in particular. Chorale Director and founder Byron J. Smith combined some of the most sought-after singers in Los Angeles to make up this dynamic choral ensemble. The group has toured the country and the world, keeping alive the music that grew out of the slavery experience and presenting the music with pride and excitement through great arrangements and dynamic singing. The Spirit Chorale has performed with a wide range of artists from Barry Manilow to Richard Smallwood and Wynton Marsallis, and has released four CD projects. Along with the spirituals, Director Smith is known for his uplifting and dynamic gospel selections that have been recorded, performed and appreciated worldwide.
The Spirit Chorale of Los Angeles is a unique chorale ensemble blessed with a message of hope and love.
Artist Q & A
What is your favorite memory about being in the L.A. County Holiday Celebration and why?
Our favorite memory is the appreciation received from the live audiences through smiles, waves and audience participation claps. The Spirit Chorale has always stepped out of the norm by performing a variety of African American musical pieces with everything from a political overtone ("I'll Stand" and "The Battle of Jericho") to pieces with inspiring messages ("I Surrender All" and "Lift Him Up").
What do you enjoy the most about performing in general?
Whenever we take the stage, we find joy in keeping alive a style of music that is uniquely American and appreciated worldwide. The Negro spiritual is a product of a negative experience in American history that brings hope and joy to all who experiences it. Gospel music is uplifting in its title. It is the music built of the uplifting words of Christ. You always feel better after hearing a great Gospel song.
If you could say one uplifting thing to Los Angeles and the people watching your video now, what would it be?
Spirituals and Gospel music is the best medicine for whatever ails you. In these trying times, we wonder what tomorrow will bring. In our song "Somebody's Knockin’” it says "More blessings you may need to grow stronger every day. More grace and mercy to receive, just wait and watch and pray!” and " No matter what tomorrow brings, you can just open and let the Lord come in and bless you today!"
