Get radical at this edition of Sleepless: The Music Center After Hours – Free Radicals. Explore the weird edges of science and art as The Music Center’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion is transformed into a late night happening featuring live DJ sets, dancing, largescale projections, performance art, VR experiences, molecular gastronomy demos, workshops and more.

In partnership with Fulcrum Arts, this distinct Sleepless reimagines the role of artist as the scientist in experimental and provoking new ways. Stay up and discover the art of science.

This special Sleepless: The Music Center After Hours contains mature content. Recommended for ages 18 and above.

SLEEPLESS LINEUP:

  • The Laboratory for Embodied Intelligences / Nina Waisman + Flora Wiegmann + Drew Heitzler
    Enter the Sleepless lab and find pop-up dance pieces inspired by the interaction of microbes with vocals from experimental sound artist Carmina Escobar. 
  • OVNI / Rafa Esparza + San Cha
    OVNI is the third and final installment of Mexika Eagle. The performance is part of a trilogy that takes Brown queer bodies on a journey vis a vis a shifting adobe brick spaceship that travels through time and space.
  • WWJD / Archie Prakash 
    Delve into a virtual reality experience focused on the effects of Christianity and video game culture that mixes iconography from the Bible and pop culture in a VR landscape.
  • Molecular Gastronomy Lab
    Watch food transform into art during live molecular gastronomy demonstrations. 
  • I’ll Be Here Unless I Don’t Need To Be (Until Then…) / Elliot Reed
    Survey the surveyor and watch as artist Elliot Reed assembles a drone piece by piece. 
  • Slow Sound / Organized by Touch
    Plug into this headphone experience with curated field recordings from UK-based label Touch, interwoven with live sets from Jasmin Blasco and Zachary Paul. 
  • 10,000 Peacock Feathers in Foaming Acid / Evelina Domnitch + Dmitry Gelfand
    Inspect the unusual behavior of light through giant projections of the molecular dynamics that occur within soap bubbles, as well as the mind-boggling phenomena of non-linear optics. 
  • Covert Agent / Mark Steger
    Gather in awe to witness performance artist Mark Steger’s homage to the human body, performed entirely while suspended in air. 
  • DJ Sets from Kid606, Nicolas Bougaïeff, and One Child Policy
    Move to the sounds of some of today’s most adventurous and forward thinking producers, featuring techno sets from DJs Kid606, Nicolas Bougaïeff, and One Child Policy.
  • Tranimal Workshop / Austin Young, Squeaky Blonde, Fade-dra
    Change the way you perceive gender, beauty and identity with this playful workshop that features an animalistic and post-modern interpretation of ‘drag queen.’

    Dial in to hear field recordings from Chris Watson and Jana Winderen (curated by the UK label Touch) at the Sleepless Phone Booths.
