The FOOSA Philharmonic
The FOOSA Philharmonic, directed by Thomas Loewenheim, explores a new world of Romantic music with the West Coast premiere of Alfredo Casella’s Sinfonia No. 2. Born in Italy during the time of Verdi, Casella studied in Debussy’s Paris alongside Maurice Ravel, and was heavily influenced by the great German Romantics like Mahler and Strauss. Casella’s Sinfonia No. 2, completed in 1910 at the age of 27, combines these varied influences into a rare and unique gem of the late-Romantic era.
That same year, Richard Strauss, having taken his place as one of the world’s most-famous living composers, completed his opera Der Rosenkavalier. The Philharmonic will perform the beloved orchestra suite from this widely-popular opera.
Founded in 2013, FOOSA has paired top professionals from symphonies and universities across the country with talented young musicians in a full-immersion program producing much-lauded performances across California, including an annual concert at Walt Disney Concert Hall.
