LA Phil Dudamel Leads Songs of the Americas

As part of the Pan-American Music Initiative, Gustavo Dudamel—a lover of choral music whose mother was a voice teacher—leads arresting choral music from North, South, and Central America. Featuring the Los Angeles Master Chorale and the Mexican Tambuco Percussion Ensemble, who Gramophone hailed for their “tour-de-force of subtle and forceful artistry,” this wide-ranging program includes Gabriela Ortiz’ musical telling of the 16th-century liberator of slaves in Veracruz in Yanga and Villa-Lobos’ mysterious and heart-rending Chôros No. 10. Opening the concert is a sublime piece composed by the late José Antonio Abreu, founder of Venezuela’s El Sistema and mentor to Dudamel.
