Grand Park

Presented for the first time outdoors!

SLEEP takes the listener on an overnight eight-hour musical journey that pushes the boundaries of post-minimalism and the interplay of music and consciousness. Scored for piano, strings, electronics and vocals, Richter’s piece is an exquisite hybrid of classical and electronic music across 31 uninterrupted pieces. Performed live by Max Richter on piano and keyboard along with the musicians on the 2015 Deutsche Grammophon recording of the work, American Contemporary Music Ensemble, and soprano Grace Davidson, SLEEP invites listeners to fall asleep and drift in and out of consciousness and lucid dream states, entering into another world through the act of slumbering. The absorbing soundscape culminates as dawn breaks and sunlight streams over City Hall and into Grand Park, awakening the audience to a new day.

“A personal lullaby for a frenetic world” and “A manifesto for a slower pace of existence.” – Max Richter

“…music [is] at times so soft and trance-inducing that you can’t help but slip into a relaxed state.”  The Wall Street Journal
