Alec Kwo is a professional music producer and keyboardist based in Koreatown, Los Angeles, California. He grew up playing percussion in his grade school orchestras and studied both classical and jazz piano at Santa Clara University. These experiences led to his love of playful rhythms, complex harmony and lush arrangements, shaping his career as a musician and producer. Since 2021, Alec has worked as a Teaching Artist for Rhythm & Truth, a music therapy practice, and as a Music Mentor for Innovative Group Psychotherapy. He deeply values the power of using music as a tool for improving mental health. Currently, he is studying to become a Board Certified Music Therapist.
In his work in schools, students learn that rhythm, keeping a steady beat and trained listening are the foundations of good musicianship. They will explore these concepts and more, through hand and body percussion activities. Students will also learn the concept of harmony--the combining of multiple notes together. This leads to an ability to create beautiful new sounds and textures, similar to the process of mixing colors. Learning to define and recognize melodies enables them to compose their own songs in class. He also introduces them to music recording technology, microphones, amplifies, synthesizers and more!
Alec emphasizes that we are all creative and have a role to play in the composing and playing of music. It is a team effort. Music helps bring students together and teaches collaboration.
