About
Masanga Marimba performs traditional and popular music from Africa and Latin America, blending African, Latin and American traditions. Featuring seven Zimbabwean marimbas, vocals, drums, percussion, trumpet and trombone, the group creates an upbeat and family-friendly sound. Founded in 2000, Masanga Marimba has performed at prominent venues such as the Hollywood Bowl, the Getty Center and the Ford Amphitheatre and has opened for artists like Neil Young, Norah Jones and Ziggy Marley. Led by Cal State Northridge ethnomusicologist Dr. Ric Alviso, the ensemble includes members with expertise in percussion, composition, jazz and ethnomusicology. As the only marimba group in Southern California combining Latin and African traditions, Masanga Marimba offers a unique musical experience.
