Lily Cai

The Flying Goddess & The Fan Dance

Lily Cai, a Chinese-American, preserves her traditional Chinese culture by performing ancient court dances with a modern flavor.  The two classical dances highlight the contrasts between two different dynasties.  One of the dances,The Flying Goddess, is a ribbon dance that represents the beautiful spirit of a goddess. Lessons include the concept of 'classical circles' which serve as spatial patterns traveled on the floor and in the gestural patterns of the dancers, a Chinese Ribbon Dance to learn and perform, and animal-mime dances from a selection of Chinese cultural groups.  Enduring Values and Transformation are emphasized.
