The Tinkers, a roving pipe-and-drum band, bring their exciting program filled with vitality and humor to stages across America as they blend the ancient art of Highland bagpipes with the primitive, driving rhythms of drums -- the bass drum, bodhran (Irish Rim Drum) and snare. Enjoy stirring jigs and rousing reels from the Scottish Highlands, spiced with the Celtic tunes of Ireland and the many lands graced by the Gaelic people. Listen to the tones of the Great Highland Bagpipe joined to the ancient and haunting call of the Bronze-Age Celtic Horn - a sound lost for over a millennium.
An up-beat and lively presentation, band members also provide interesting historical background about the geography, climate and history of Scotland. A performance highlight is the costuming of an audience volunteer in traditional tartan, an intriguing behind-the-scenes look at the form, function and history of the kilt. Narration about other Scottish highland dress, as well as information about the daily life in 18th century Scotland is also shared. Students are able to imagine living in times long past as they listen to marches, jigs and reels that may have been heard hundreds of years ago at Scottish weddings or other celebrations, or even around the campfire of a Highland raiding party.
