Bring your family to Día de la Familia on the new Music Center Plaza, as we kick off the YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles) tour to Mexico City. It’s free for all! Outside food welcome.
- Enjoy performances by YOLA and Mariachi Los Camperos.
- Have fun with artmaking workshops by creating colorful tambourines with artist Ana Miro Herrans and decorating sugar skulls with artist Maria Elena Cruz in remembrance of ancestors.
- Get lost in a dramatic mix of Spanish and English traditional tales from Latin America with Storyteller and Author Olga Loya, as well as stories from her own varied and colorful life growing up in East Los Angeles. Storytelling will be presented in English and Spanish.
In the fall of 2007, the LA Phil and its community partners launched Youth Orchestra Los Angeles, a music program for 80 students in South L.A.
YOLA currently serves more than 1,200 young musicians across four sites, providing them with free instruments, intensive music instruction (up to 18 hours per week), academic support, and leadership training. The program began as an adaptation of Venezuela’s revolutionary El Sistema music education program, but it is now an innovative model in its own right, guiding students and teachers from nearly 100 music programs around the country.
