Visual Arts Category

The following applies to both the Two-Dimensional Art Category and the Photo Category:

No Theme
Applicants should submit work that best reflects their artistic vision, technical skill and understanding of medium chosen.

Judging
The judging will be conducted by a panel of visual art professionals. Judging of the artwork will be based on:
• Artistic choices
• Skill and execution
• Originality/Creativity

How to Submit Your Artwork
Preliminary Round:
Do not send in original artwork. Preliminary submissions must be reproductions only. Send in one reproduction of your work: either a 35mm slide, an 8'' x 10'' copy or photograph, or a jpeg file. 2D Art only: You may also submit a detail view. A detail is a close-up image of the artwork to show a particular feature, for example, texture.

Digital reproductions (jpegs) can be uploaded with an online application. Instructions on the website. You can also submit them on a CD. Save your jpegs as: Print Size: 8'' x 10'' at a resolution of 72dpi. Name the file your full name. Save your detail as your full name plus the word “detail.” For example, JoeJonesDetail.jpg

Labeling: Slides, Copies/Photographs or CDs.
Type this information on a label or print CLEARLY.
• your full name
• your school
• if you include a detail image, mark it “detail”
• the correct orientation by writing “top”

Semifinal Round:
If you are selected as a semifinalist, you will be invited to show and discuss your artwork with the judges. At this interview, you must bring the original work from the reproduction you submitted. Semifinalists must be prepared to bring additional finished works as well as portfolios and sketchbooks. In order for semifinalists’ artwork to be judged and displayed at the Gallery Awards Reception and Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, semifinalists must give original work to the Spotlight Awards at the semifinal interviews. Details will be in your semifinal notification letter.

How to Retrieve Your Artwork
Reproductions, slides, copies, CDs will not be returned. All semifinal artwork can be picked up after May 1, 2008. Work that is not picked up by June 30, 2008 will become the property of the Music Center. The Spotlight Awards is not responsible for lost or damaged artwork.

Two-Dimensional Art: Criteria for Submission
A work of art that has height and width but no depth.

Size Limitations: Image size no larger than 18''x 24''

Media:
• Computer Art (Please enter digital photographs in the
Photography Category.)
• Drawing (Drawings should be from life and observation or
your own photographs. Please do not submit drawings done
from published photographs.)
• Mixed Media
• Painting
• Printmaking

Photography Criteria for Submission:
Manipulation of the image either in the darkroom or by
computer is permissible. Photo collage is also allowed.

Size Limitations: Images can be no larger than 16'' x 20''

Media:
• Traditional Film (Black & White or Color)
• Digital
