As schools work to make the arts an important part of the instructional program, it is vital that teachers receive the resources and support they will need to be effective. Music Center programs facilitate a dynamic partnership between teaching artists and teachers to maximize student learning. While some classroom teachers have a great deal of experience teaching artistic disciplines, others may not feel as comfortable and may even find the arts to be intimidating. The Music Center provides a range of professional development programs and services, all rooted in the California Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Standards, to help teachers along a continuum towards being able to fully integrate the arts into daily classroom instruction.

Working closely with our staff, schools plan a comprehensive arts education program that includes student workshops, assembly performances, field trips and Music Center activities, and these professional development components:

Institute for Educators at the Music Center
Available by invitation only, the Institute for Educators is a year-long professional development experience in the arts. Beginning with an intensive four-day program in July, the Institute gives educators innovative ways of teaching the arts and strategies for making effective connections with other core subject areas. ...more
 
Teacher In-Services in the Schools
Teacher In-Services provide hands-on instruction to teachers in music, dance, theatre and the visual arts. A professional artist from the Music Center will visit your school for a single two-hour workshop, up to a series of five-hour classes scheduled throughout the year. In-Service sessions are aligned with school instructional goals and can be customized to match teachers prior experience teaching a particular arts discipline. ...more
 
Saturday Professional Development Workshops at the Music Center
Held at the Music Center on select Saturdays throughout the year, these teacher workshops are designed to expand teacher skills and knowledge in the core content of dance, music, theatre and the visual arts. Each four-hour session is led by a professional artist and appropriate for all levels of teacher experience. ...more
 
Artsource® Curriculum
As a curriculum tool for educators, artists and arts-specialist, Artsource® contains more than 65 curriculum units featuring outstanding professional artists and their works. ...more
 
Online Educator Network
The Online Educator Network uses the Web to support educators in bringing the arts into the classroom. The site offers a range of teacher resources, including lesson plans in each discipline. ...more
 
Joffrey Ballet Dance Experience
Coinciding with select Dance at the Music Center performances, Dance Experience events include an in-depth workshop led by a Music Center teaching artist about a specific Artsource curriculum unit in dance; a copy of the Artsource unit to keep at your school; and a ticket to a dance performance at the Music Center. Past Dance Experience events have included an Artsource unit on and live performance of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Jose Limon Dance Company and the Joffrey Ballet, to name a few. ...more
