Artsource® DANCE: Multidisciplinary Connections
ISBN: 0-9652822-2-8
- REVELATIONS featuring Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater
"Revelations" celebrates the human spirit and one's ability to overcome
adversity. The artistic vision of Alvin Ailey profoundly captures the
essence of his black experience in America. The lessons feature material
based on the African-American cultural heritage and explore the themes
of Freedom and Oppression, as well as Transformation. Includes video
and audio.
- IMPRESSIONS #2 featuring Bella Lewitzky & the Lewitzky Dance Company
This unit is based on Bella Lewitzky's responses to selected paintings
by Vincent van Gogh, including "Starry Night" and "Portraits." The lessons
focus on an interdisciplinary approach which involves creative movement,
language and visual images. The Power of Nature and Transformation are
the highlighted themes. Includes video and slides.
- VOICE/DANCE IMPROVISATION featuring Tandy Beal & Bobby McFerrin
Choreographer Tandy Beal and musician Bobby McFerrin explore the art
of improvisation and demonstrate how this art requires a great deal
of trust, alertness and the ability of each person to respond spontaneously
to each other. The lessons highlight Transformation and are designed
to guide students in the creative process using simple techniques to
encourage improvisation in both movement and sound. Includes video and
audio.
- WOOLLOOMOOLOO CUDDLE featuring Remy Charlip
Remy Charlip shows how our perception of what dance is can be changed
by the way we view the ordinary events of our lives. He has evolved
unique and delightful approaches to creating dances that reflect the
theme of Transformation, including his "Radio Dance" and "Air Mail Dances."
The lessons focus on techniques for imaginative dance-making in a variety
of media. Includes video and audio.
- FIREBIRD featuring Arthur Mitchell & the Dance Theatre of Harlem
Arthur Mitchell, the first black male dancer with the New York City
Ballet, shows the power of an individual to overcome adversity and transcend
social attitudes. "The Firebird," an old Russian folk tale, is a metaphor
for Freedom and Oppression as the Dance Theatre of Harlem transforms
it into a universal tale. Includes video and slides.
