Ernesto Salcedo - Latin American Folk Music

Workshop: In Latin America, music is used with dance, storytelling, singing and other art forms as a vehicle for handing down wisdom, history and knowledge. Ernesto Salcedo's workshops are designed to uphold the spirit of those traditions. Students practice the techniques and motor skills required to play Orff xylophones, conventional folk instruments and rhythms, and basic dance movements. Historical and cultural context are provided through storytelling and song. Areas of study can include pre-Hispanic music, traditional Native American contemporary music, and the influence of African and European cultures.

Ernesto Salcedo focuses on the music of Mesoamerica (early Mexico, Central America and South America) and the Southwest United States. With over 30 years of musical experience playing woodwinds, flutes, Latin percussion and guitar, his expertise includes folk, traditional and contemporary musical styles. Working with “oral traditions” passed on by traditional cultures, his work covers the history, culture, arts and sciences of the Uto-Azteca and Mayan cultures. Uto-Azteca is the term used for all the native peoples from the area of the U.S. Southwest, Mexico and Central America. As Director of Nuevo Mundo: New World Ensemble, a musical group based in Los Angeles, he explores the evolution of America Indigena, demonstrating how Ancient America became the New World. Through music, drumming, song and dance, Nuevo Mundo reveals the history, cultural myths and influences from ancient times to the present.
