Julie Kirk - Street Painting

Workshop: Host an Italian street painting festival at your school! Creative, educational and fun, workshops with artist Julie Kirk expose students to the art of street painting. Beginning with a slide show detailing artwork from ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt and Mesopotamia, Ms. Kirk shares and explains the history of the art form. Participants see examples crafted by the masters, along with examples of the artist's own work created for Italian Street Painting Festivals all over California. Mathematical and scientific concepts are used by students to measure and "grid up" a design, and to discover the chemical properties and use of pigments and binders in pastels. Depending on the length and number of sessions, students may either copy work of the great masters, develop original work or produce a combination of both approaches. Each participating classroom produces a separate painting. The final lesson in a series will be a daylong festival in which classes work on and complete their street paintings.

Julie Kirk is recognized nationally and internationally as an accomplished street painter, even garnering awards in Mantova, Italy, home of the world's oldest street painting festival. Kirk uses her strengths as a figurative artist and as a street painter when she teaches. She has done workshops on the art of street painting across the nation and has even started doing workshops in Europe. Kirk has traveled throughout the United States as a featured painter in a number of festivals, and competed in the famous International Street Painting Festival in Grazie di Curtatone, Italy in 2003 where she placed first in her entered category of "Semplici", advancing her to the next division of "Qualificato" for the 2004 festival. She also has created a body of work that includes mixed media and oil paintings, and actively exhibits these paintings in local galleries. Her clients include Disney Entertainment, Lexus Corporation and the Long Beach Aquarium. She earned her BFA at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, and completed her MFA in 2003 at CSU Fullerton, where she also teaches upper division life drawing.
