April and October

Do you like playing music for fun?
Are you learning to play a new instrument or a new piece of music?
Not afraid to PRACTICE music in an outdoor public space?

Then PUBLIC PRACTICE is for you!

HOW DOES IT WORK?
A unique and INFORMAL music-making opportunity...

  • Selected volunteer non-professional instrumentalists practice music outdoors in designated "off-the-beaten-path" public spaces on the Music Center campus.
  • Choose to participate as a solo musician or as part of a duo (with another musician you already know).
  • Practice either a new piece of music or a new instrument - warm-ups, scales, starts/stops and repeated phrases, mistakes and improvisation.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
You can apply to participate as a solo musician OR as a duo (with another musician you know).

  • Open to non-professional instrumentalists and music hobbyists of all skill levels and cultural musical traditions.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must provide your own acoustic instrument*, sheet music and music stand (if needed).
  • Must be available for two 30-minute practice sessions at the Music Center during daytime hours on a Wednesday or Friday in April 2010.
  • Must be willing to spend time practicing (not performing) in an outdoor public space.
*NOTE: Instruments that require electricity to amplify sound, such as keyboards, are not considered acoustic. Also, this program is designed as a practice opportunity for instrumentalists and not vocalists. Thank you.

HOW DO I APPLY?
Application period is now closed. Please check back in August 2010 for updates on the next round of Public Practice.

Musicians are selected based on stated interest, understanding of Public Practice goals, and commitment to recreational music-making. There is no audition.

DUOS: Each duo partner must submit her/his own DUO application. Your DUO application will be linked to your duo partner's application and reviewed together.

DEADLINE: Apply by March 12. We encourage you to apply early!

There is no audition. Musicians will be selected based on stated interest, understanding of Public Practice goals, and commitment to recreational music-making.
