Do you like playing music for fun?
Need a change of scene for your music practice routine?
Ever wonder what your music would sound like when practiced outdoors?

Then PUBLIC PRACTICE is for you!

Refresh your music practice routine with PUBLIC PRACTICE.
Enjoy the outdoors and interplay with urban street sounds while practicing (not performing) your music in unexpected, off-the-beaten path public spaces at the Music Center.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
A unique and INFORMAL music-making opportunity...

  • Selected volunteer non-professional instrumentalists practice music outdoors in designated "off-the-beaten path" public spaces on the Music Center campus.
  • Choose to participate as a solo musician or as part of a duo (with another musician you know).
  • Practice a new piece of music or a new instrument - warm-ups, scales, riffs, patterns, improvisation, starts/stops and mistakes allowed.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
You can apply to participate as a solo musician or as part of a duo (with another musician you know).

  • Open to non-professional instrumental musicians/music hobbyists of all skill levels and cultural musical traditions.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must provide your own acoustic instrument*, sheet music and music stand (if needed).
  • Must be available for two 30-minute practice sessions at the Music Center during daytime hours on a Wednesday or Friday in October 2010.
  • Must be willing to spend time practicing (not performing) in an outdoor public space.
*Note: Instruments that require electricity to amplify sound, such as keyboards, are not considered acoustic. This program is designed as a practice opportunity for instrumentalists and not vocalists.
