The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion is located on the south end of the Music Center Plaza. The Plaza is bordered by Grand Avenue on the East and Hope Street on the West. Get Directions.

About the Theatre
With chandeliers, wide curving stairways and one of the largest stages in the country, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion has proven itself as an important part of Los Angeles history. Its rich décor intrigued The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and provided the perfect setting for the Academy Awards 24 times during the 20th century.

The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion's Resident Company, the Los Angeles Opera, is the United States' fourth largest opera company and promises outstanding singing, great conducting, and stunning productions.

Fact File

  • Construction began March 9, 1962
  • Site dedicated September 27, 1964
  • Opened December 6, 1964 with Zubin Mehta conducting the Los Angeles Philharmonic with soloist Jascha Heifetz
  • Opening Performances: "Fanfare" by Richard Strauss, "American Festival Overture" by William Schuman, "Roman Festivals" by Ottorino Respighi, Beethoven's Violin Concerto
